Nocturnal basking in freshwater turtles: A global assessment

چکیده

Diurnal basking (“sunning”) is common in many ectotherms and generally thought to be a behavioural mechanism for thermoregulation. Recent studies have reported the occurrence of nocturnal few distantly-related species freshwater turtles, but true extent this behaviour unknown, it may underreported due sampling biases (e.g., not surveying turtles at night). Therefore, we initiated global, collaborative effort systematically document quantify activity (diurnal nocturnal) across wide range turtle locations. We conducted camera trap or manual surveys North America, Caribbean, Europe, Asia, Africa, Seychelles, Australia. collected 873,111 trail photographs (25,273 hrs search effort) obtained data on 29 from seven families. Nocturnal was documented 13 species, representing six families (Chelidae, Emydidae, Geoemydidae, Kinosternidae, Pelomedusidae, Trionychidae), including representatives Central Trinidad Tobago, restricted tropical sub-tropical locations, suggesting that environmental temperature plays role behaviour. However, primary factors driving are yet determined vary geographically by species. The frequency duration varied among seasons, events were often substantially longer than diurnal events. This first study widespread basking, our results suggest common, although overlooked, aspect species’ ecology.

Characteristics and Risk Assessment of International Trade in Tortoises and Freshwater Turtles in China

– Commercial exploitation of freshwater turtles and tortoises has increased significantly in China since the 1990s, which has expedited the listing of some turtle species in Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Appendix II. We assessed the risk to tortoises and freshwater turtles native to China by analyzing biological and socio-economic variab...

Terrestrial habitat requirements of nesting freshwater turtles

Because particular life history traits affect species vulnerability to development pressures, cross-species summaries of life history traits are useful for generating management guidelines. Conservation of aquatic turtles, many members of which are regionally or globally imperiled, requires knowing the extent of upland habitat used for nesting. Therefore, we compiled distances that nests and gr...

Basking Behavior of the Hawaiian Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas)l

Observations were made on green turtles basking on the white sand beaches at French Frigate Shoals in the northwestern Hawaiian Islands. The highest rectal temperature recorded from the basking turtles was 31.3°C, but the surface temperature of the carapace attained values as great as 42.8°C. During basking, the turtles flipped sand onto their carapaces, but they did not appear to orientate the...
